What are those big
white webs in my
tree? The eastern tent caterpillar, Mabcosoma americana, can be found in al stales east of the Rocky Mountains. WBd cherry and apple trees are preferred, while peach, plum, rose, and pear are also susceptible. The egg masses are cowered with a foamy secretion that dries to a very firm brown covering, usualy a naif-inch long attached to a branch. Tiny larvae or caterpittars hatch from these egg masses in the early spring about the same time the leaves begin to break. The young caterpillars stay together for about two days before weaving a tent in the fork of the tree. As the caterpillars grow, the tents are enlarged to accommodate their size. They reach maturity about six weeks after hatching. The young larvae typically emerge from the tent at night and feed on young tender leaves, then return at dawn. Host trees are often completely defoliated, but they usualy wH leaf out again and appear normal in a few weeks. Repeated defoliation for a period of several years wM weaken trees and make them susceptible to borers and rftsease-causing organisms. lent caterpiar management is often necessary to prevent defoliation.
