Closing the hearing
Cordani was allowed to speak again as the hearing drew to a close. With his second chance at the podium, Cordani insisted that the Board of Supervisors reject the school budget to provide tax relief for the citizens.
“We need a break this year,” he said. “We can’t compare Rappahannock to anybody, because we aren’t like anyone else, we only have one pocket.
“And I’m glad that there are people here who keep saying, ‘Let’s pay more, let’s pay more.’ Well darn it, they can take it out of their pocket and pay my share,” Cordani continued.
Following the hearing Piedmont Supervisor Eddie Wayland made a motion to cancel Thursday’s work session between the school board and the Board of Supervisors, citing the need to speak with his constituents.
But Jackson District Supervisor Ron Frazier disagreed, arguing that questions still needed to be answered and the work session would give them the forum to continue with that dialog.
“The people need answers,” he said. “We’re going to cancel a meeting and vote on a budget next week without a work session? Where are we going to talk about answers?”
When Anderson asked for a discussion, Wakefield District Supervisor Roger Welch spoke of the board’s role in the budget process, noting that it is against the law to change line items in the school budget.
“We can’t micro-manage the school budget,” Welch stated. “Our responsibility is to either approve the budget or not approve the amount of funds that they are asking for.”
Welch said that the work session should remain in place.
Frazier agreed, saying, “There have been a lot of statements made tonight, some of them right and some of them wrong. I think that during the work session we should be able to get an opportunity to ask some questions of the school board.”
The board voted to leave the work session intact.
The session between the Board of Supervisors and the School Board will be held tonight at 8 p.m. in the RCHS Library following the band concert.
The supervisors will vote on the proposed school budget on May 7.
