olds, and I don’t think he will fare too well. When he comes to the quarter pole, where he normally has already blown the field away, I think that he will find himself in a dogfight, and I don’t think he’s ready.
As a handicapper, I’m taking a stand against this talented individual. Throw him off of your betting ticket.
Next in line is Hard Spun, ridden by mid-Atlantic jockey Mario Pino, who’s won almost 6,000 races without ever being known as a money jock. This colt has talent, and his workout Monday was the fastest preDerby work in 34 years. (The horse that worked faster, more than three decades ago — Forego — ran fourth in the Derby, which shows that workouts aren’t definitive.)
I like the colt, but the work — which was a second and a half faster than the next-best work at the distance — backs me off him. I could see him in the final four, though.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has four possible starters — Scat Daddy, Any Given Saturday, Cowtown Cat and Circular Quay, probably any one of which is capable of winning the Derby on his day. But will any of them have “his day” Saturday? Good question. Pletcher seems to win every big stakes race during the year, but he seems to come up small on the really big days — the Breeders’ Cup and the Derby
