“Our ultimate goal is make the good, better and the better the best, and we will work together to achieve our end,” said Piedmont representative Aline Johnson.
School Board Chairman Ken Marlor, a representative of the Stonewall-Hawthome District spoke about the importance of teachers in children’s lives, noting that it was important to raise educators’ salaries.
“I’m not saying move them to the top of the ladder, I am saying take them off of the bottom,” Marlor said.
School* board members also lamented the current state funding formula. .
“We are frustrated with a state funding system that puts the squeeze on every local taxpayer,” voiced Wakefield District board member Rosa Crocker. “Some would discredit the schools as unworthy of any funding increase as the answer to resolving this common dilemma, but I must respectively reject this and point to ample evidence that our investment is reasonable, the return is respectable and the need fundamentally important, even urgent.”
Hampton District representative Meredith Gorfein said the amount of funding from the State of Virginia is “criminal.”
“Rappahannock has little in the way of additional sources of revenue other than our pockets,” she said. “Funding the schools is not a burden, it’s part of taking care of the next generation and providing for the future.”
