School supporters,
tax critics
In spite of the sharpness of some of the criticism, there were more supporters in the room that spoke in favor of funding the entire school budget, asking that critics not blame the school system for their higher taxes.
About 25 people spoke in favor of the school budget while 13 spoke against it.
“What is disturbing about a meeting like this is the misplaced anger that is fired at the school system,” said Bill Dietel, a Wakefield District resident for 26 years. “We should ask the question, ‘How do we increase the Amount of taxable monies available to fund sound government?’ rather than firing at a school system that is demonstrably better on all scores.”
Dietel said that Rappahannock citizens should unite to advocate for smarter tax policy.
