Then there’s Nobiz Like Shobiz, the colt that caused the owner to rqect a $17.5 million offer last year after two races. He’s trained by Barclay Tagg, and anybody who knows me knows that I’m in the tank for Barclay. He’s been a friend and trainer for us for more than 22 years. He’s like family.
When he won the Derby with Funny Cide four years ago, it was the defining moment in a long career characterized more by struggle and slow horses than with top-class horses. Funny Cide, after all, was a $22,000 yearling, and that’s the kind of horse that Barclay has gotten, not the million dollar yearlings that fill the stables of some other trainers.
Yet there’s probably no one who gets more run out of modestly-bred horses than Barclay. In our case, we sent him horses by stallions that stood for $3,500, $6,500, $5,000 and $12,500, and he turned them into graded stakes winners of $400,000, $758,000, $380,000 and $433,000 respectively. I’d say we got a run for our money.
