The entertainment world has once again taken note of Johanna Day, a world-class actress from Rappahannock County who has made a big name for herself on the stage. Johanna Day—a 1981 graduate of Rappahannock County High School—has recently won the prestigious Helen Hayes Award as Leading Actress in a Resident Play. This award is the most famous of theatre awards in the region and follows others she has garnered, including a Tony award nomination several years ago for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in Proof.
Named for the famed actress Helen Hayes to recognize excellence in professional theatre in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the Helen Hayes Award is presented by the Washington Theatre Awards Society. Over 80 professional theatre companies in the area participate in the awards program. Other well-known actors have received this award as well, including James Earl Jones, Mary Martin, Angela Lansbuiy, Jason Robards, Chita Rivera, and Jerry Herman.
Day also has appeared in numerous plays on and off Broadway for a number of years, including a highly-acclaimed role at Arena Stage four years ago in An American Daughter. She even had a guest role in the TV drama, Law and Order.
Johanna Day’s latest recognition comes from her work in 2006 at Arena Stage as the leading actress in The Rainmaker, a classic,made-in-America type of miracle story that evokes a sense of place and time with a message of redemption that is always a popular theme.
