The superlatives continue to roll in about Saturday’s Virginia Gold Cup races, and if early-week predictions hold true, they’re all accurate.
The richest timber race ever contested — $100,000 — runs as the feature at the May 5 Gold Cup meet at Great Meadow near Hie Plains. The prize has attracted the biggest number of entries, 16 at press time, in the last 50 years. Though last year's winner Miles Ahead was notably absent from the entry box (he was injured in a March 24 prep race), the field is rich in talent as the best group of American timber stars is slated to meet in the four-mile de facto championship.
In Miles Ahead’s absence, former national champion Bubble Economy tops the list of nominations, with red-hot amateur Diana Gill am expected to get the call from trainer Jack Fisher. Trainer of six-time Cup winner Saluter, Fisher is something of a Great Meadow specialist Fisher also nominated Mr. Bombastic and Seeyouattheevent. Others to watch are
