On July 1, Rappahannock County High School teacher and varsity boys basketball coach Bob Czekaj took over the reins as RCHS’s new athletic director. Two days after stepping in for the departed J.D. Almond, Czekaj sat down with the Rappahannock News to discuss his vision for RCHS’s athletic program.

What is the biggest challenge that yon face as RCHS’s new athletic director?

Well, first of all, J.D. (Almond) has done a wonderful job over the last few 'years of pointing this program in the right direction. But the one thing that I’d like to see change is the number of students who participate in athletics. I’d like to see us increase our participation in every sport. Athletics are an important part of high school, and I hope to get more of our students involved.

How do yon plan to get more students involved in athletics?

That’s the million-dollar question. But I think we’ve got to build a positive outlook for our programs. Become more competitive. Nobody wants to play for a team that’s going to go out and get beat by 40 points or 10 goals. So, if we can make our teams more competitive, then we will be able to draw more interest in our programs.

What are your thoughts on the facilities and equipment at RCHS?

For a school our size, we have some of the best facilities around and our booster club has been wonderful in helping us raise funds to get new equipment and uniforms. We’ve got a brand new track, a state-of-the art training facility, new wrestling room and excellent baseball fields. Our facilities are in great shape. And as far as equipment and stuff, we’ve got an excellent support system in this county. I can’t say enough about our booster dub.

What do you say to those who want to squash the football program after just two years?

Be patient. It takes time to build a successful program. I think some people expected us to go out and be successful right away, but it doesn’t happen over night. We’ve got to be fair and give the football program a chance. I don’t hear people calling for us to cut the soccer program or the basketball program when we have down years, so let’s be patient, its only been two years. We are trying our best to build a successful program and hopefully I can work with Mike Williams (RCHS’s new head football coach) and get things on the right
