Celebrating
T^ie fruits of their labors were realized on July 4
when several thousand turned out for the fireworks
festivities south of Spenyville.
Richie Burke and his committee and cadre of volunteers orchestrated in a big way the return of a tradition that had been lost in the county.
Now back in a fiery burst, planning is already underway for next year’s event.
Community service is easy to give lip service to but backing it up with action takes on a life of its own. And when it does, it’s a beautiful thing to see.
A lot has been said about the spirit in Rappahannock County, how folks rally to get things done or rally so that. some things don’t get done.
It’s true.
John McCarthy and Jean Lillard are the strings behind the Fodderstack. Ester Settle is a shining example of a woman coping with her own challenges as well as finding the energy to rally folks for the Relay of Life. Helen Williams gets the county behind the annual tour of homes and dried flower show each year. Katherine Bull keeps the gardens green with her annual fetes. The Taste of Rappahannock is celebrating a 10-year anniversary this September and Cheri Woodard and Tterri Latham are once again co-chairing that event Claudia Mitchell and the folks with the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community will bring hark the art tour in November and when the first weekend in December rolls around, the Washington Hospitality and Visitors Association will coordinate the Christmas Parade in Little Washington for the third year.
The Power-Line Landowners Alliance formed recently under the auspices of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection to challenge Dominion’s proposed power-line through Rappahannock and surrounding counties.
These are just a few examples. There are many more.
And, now the fireworks are back with a bang.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here all your life or you’ve come here to establish a home. It doesn’t matter if you work in the county or come to the county to work.
When it comes to making things happen, this county has proven that it can do that and that is certainly worth celebrating.
