Verizon completes
fix for Slate Mills
By Kevin Allen
Rappahannock News Staff Writer
Representatives from Verizon attended the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 2 to apologize for telephone problems in the Slate Mills area and announce that they have achieved a fix for the ongoing outages.
The problems stemmed from water and lightning damage to copper cables that run down F.T. Valley Road from Verizon’s central office in Sperryville. The company’s technicians planned to switch residences in the southern part of Rappahannock from that copper to a fiber-optic cable that also runs along F.T. Valley Road.
Verizon representatives had planned to finish the work by July 20, but the company’s technicians completed it on June 29 - more than three weeks ahead of schedule.
“We know we’ve had some service problems in the county,” said Verizon spokesman John Knapp. “We’ve taken some steps over the last few weeks ... that hopefully will fix the situation.”
Brent Jones, Verizon’s director of installation and maintenance in central Virginia, said rural areas often have more customers served by copper wires, which are vulnerable to lightning and water damage.
“In rural areas, where you don’t have the density, it’s more complicated for us to provide the electronics, so we do have a lot more copper-fed customers than some of the more urban areas,” he said. “It gives us more of a maintenance challenge.”
