The Pearson’s, however, do not appear to be con* cerned about their future. “Once it sells, we’re prepared to work with the new owners,” John Pearson said, “We’re pretty flexible people.”
Bookstore business:
On the edge of town, Pam Owen, the owner of the FlyBy-Night bookstore agreed: “It’s basically Internet or die,” she said about her Rappahannock retail business. “Unless you are selling food, gas, or farm products, you have to be on-line to make it work. Owen rents part of the large apple building outside of town for her store. “Right now rent is very reasonable here,” she added. “As long as that continues, I should be able to stay in business.”
Another section of the apple building is rented hy Artistic Gallery, a gallery and art supply shop.
In the four years that hot store has been open, Owen said that she has witnessed a “marked decline” in traffic over the years, which led her to drastically reduce hair store hours.
Owen said that she plans to increase her Internet presence in the future to attract more customers. “Over 80 percent of my business comes through the web,” she said. Horses and Hounds
Sheila. Whaley of Horses and Hounds, a small equestrian retail store in Flint Hill said that she alaa plans, to increase her presence on the Internet. “It seems to be an important part of business these days,” she said. Her new website is scheduled to go up late this summer.
Whaley said that she still gets a lot of local business from area horse enthusiasts: “I still get a lot of business from the local fox hunters, £ H kids, and Pony Club mendbers.” .i
A former horse fitter in Pennsylvania, Whaley noted that she is always tweaking her inventory to suit the cuff: tomers in the area. ::
Flint Hill Fuels
Settles, the gas station on the edge of town serves Flint Hill as a grocery, a deli, and a convenience store as well as a repair garage and a used car dealership. Richard and Ester Settle, together with their son Bubby have operated the business in this fashion since 1972.
