But Jones did not use that as an excuse for the ongoing telephone troubles in the southern part of Rappahannock.
“Some customers perhaps have not had good service, but we’re committed to delivering better service than what they’ve experienced, especially in the Slate Mills area,” he said.
The supervisors asked if the fiber-optic cable would allow residents around Slate Mills to access high-speed Internet.
Knapp said additional electronics would need to be installed in Verizon’s office in Sperryville, but even then residents in southern Rappahannock would be too far from that central office to access a strong Internet connection.
Knapp said a signal on a digital subscriber line - commonly referred to as DSL - can only travel about three miles from the point where it originates. After that, it degrades too much to be useful.
