Rappahannock County went several years without Fourth of July
fireworks since the annual celebration stopped being held at Avon
Hall in the Town of Washington.
But this year the rocket’s red glare lit up the Rappahannock sky once again. And, judging by the record crowd that showed up for the event, county residents have missed having hometown fireworks on Independence Day.
An estimated 3,500 people went out to Bill Fletcher’s Thornton Hill Hounds Race Course to tailgate with friends and family, eat cheeseburgers and funnel cakes, listen to live‘music, enjoy the sunshine and to see the fireworks, of course.
Proceeds from the all-day event benefited the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department and other county nonprofit organizations.
“We were very pleased for our first year,” said Richie Burke, cochairman of the Fourth of July Committee. “Everybody seemed to have a good time.”
Burke said a second installment of the event is already in the works for next July.
“We’re planning on some growth for next year,” he said. “Well crane back with some new events.”
Burke said he would like to have a hot-air balloon and some more children’s events. The committee is also taking suggestions from local residents.
“It was the best organized event that I’ve ever attended in Rappahannock County,” said Walt Longyear of Fairlea Farm B&B in Washington
