Parents and players got a sneak peak at Rappahannock County High School’s new varsity football coach on Friday.
New RCHS Principal Robyn Puryear introduced Mike Williams, a 42-year-old Abingdon native, to some 40 people at the RCHS Auditorium.
“He brings a wealth of knowledge in building high school programs,” Puryear said. “Obviously, that’s what we’re looking for at Rappahannock.”
Williams takes over a young Panther program that has struggled during its first two years.
“I’m really excited about being fcere,” Williams said. “You have a new principal, a new athletic director and a new football coach. It's an exciting time to be at Rappahannock.”
Williams comes to Rappahannock from Holston High School in Damascus, where he coached for six seasons.
With just 297 students, Holston is even smaller than Rappahannock. But by last season, more than one-third of the 147 boys in the school were playing football.
