THE IRISH WAKE
Although the Irish Wake is a well-known funeral tradition, this glorious send-off of the departed is not in such widespread practice as it once was. While it is now the custom to view the body in a funeral home, a traditional wake has a the body laid out in the home of a family member or friend. With head and hands visible, the deceased is dressed in his or her best clothes, with a shroud covering the body from the chest down. Visitors are greeted at die door and -aayited tawta the body, suy*1 prayer, and be seated. All clocks in the house are stopped as a sign of respect. Refreshments are provided while family and friend reminisce.
