“You need to ride it responsibly,” he cautioned. “If you’re not a really experienced rider ... it’s just gonna end in disaster.”
Johnson said he has never ridden a sportbike, but he has been told that bikers often do not realize their actual speeds while riding them.
Chris Allen, an employee at Valley Cycle Center in Winchester, said that phenomenon is common knowledge among motorcyclists.
“It’s the position of the bike - you don't really feel like you’re going that fast on it,” Allerrsaid.
“[Flory] probably didn’t realize how fast he was going," Johnson said. “This was a good kid and he wasn’t going 100 miles an hour up the mountain or anything like that I think it was just a mistake”
Johnson said something beyond police patrols may need to be done to deter motorcyclists from speeding on U.S. 211 near the national park. Some visual reminder, such as a sign that lists the number of fatalities on that stretch of highway, could be helpful, he said.
“Fm out there patrolling the roads, trying to get people to slow down. You have to rely on the public to do what they’re supposed to do. Fm not gonna be able to catch every single person. It’s impossible,” Johnson
