The time is coming when Rappahannock will need to hire a paid EMS squad to supplement the county’s volunteer fireand-rescue companies, Burke said Wednesday. That time may be five or 10 years away, but it’s his opinion that the county needs to start planning for it.
Volunteerism is dwindling across the nation, he said, because people don’t have enough time for it. And Rappahannock’s aging population means there is less young blood joining the county’s volunteer fire-and-rescue squads.
Burke brought up the committee idea at the Rappahannock County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association’s meeting on Aug. 24, and the members were in full support.
Arthur Candenquist, the association’s secretary wrote a letter to Burke to say the committee would “enhance the public safety of those who respond to emergency incidents in Rappahannock County as well as to enhance the safety and welfare of the residents, visitors and businesses of the county”
Burke is suggesting that the committee consist of two members of the Board of Supervisors, the county administrator, the sheriff the emergency services management director, one representatives from the Fire and Rescue Association and one citizen representative. He suggests having the group meet quarterly, unless an urgent need arises
