PEC solves this by providing insurance coverage for all the regional camps. Without this, Lyt emphasizes that the nature camps would not be financially possible.
Lyt’s involvement with kids doesn’t stop with his Singing Creek camp. He also is an instructor at Nature Camp in Rockbridge County, the same camp he attended as a boy. When the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs decided that it could no longer sponsor the camp, he joined with a large group of camp alumni to save it. So far, they’ve raised over half a million dollars for needed improvements, and the camp is going strong.
For Lyt Wood, helping to instill this appreciation of nature into another generation is clearly part of his life’s work. “We have a blast, but this work is also very senous. Without a genuine appreciation of the natural world, any conservation or environmental issue is just too abstract.”
