Sportbikes are usually attractive to a younger age group, Kommes added.
“They’re easier to handle and that’s why people do the fast speeds on them,” he explained. The bikes are also more maneuverable than other types of motorcycles, he said.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles requires a written test and an on-the-road skills assessment to obtain a motorcycle driver’s license. Kommes said Blalock employees encourage customers to take additional safety courses.
Allen said employees at Afiifley Cyde also inform buyers about safety measures and equipment. But as for as getting them to obey the speed limit., he said police presence is the best way to keep bikers’speeds down.
Kommes said he tells young customers to think about how it would feel to see one of their friends get in a motorcycle wreck.
“I think these kids are nuts for going out there with the crotch rockets and seeing how fast they can go,” he said. “They just have no realization of what it’s like” to see someone get injured or die.
“Even for us in here, to hear that one of our customers has lost his life wears on us,” Kommes said.
