Consider what you can mix yourself. Warblers, orioles and thrushes like a grapefruit rind filled with fresh fruit. Try peanuts (shelled or not), dog food, peanut butter or mixture of one part rendered suet, one part peanut butter and six parts cornmeal. Pour while still hot into muffin tins and cool in refrigerator until hardened. Good activity for children!
6. Use a variety of feeders. Fill split logs with feed for the sparrows, doves, quail, juncos and towhees that like ground level feeders. A tray works well for tabletop feeders. Commercial bird feeders are designed for hanging or mounting on a post.
7. Place feeders in the right location. Because some birds won’t fly directly to a feeder, you have to move the feeder near small trees or bushes so they can stop off to survey the area for danger before flying to the feeder perch.
