In his announcement, McCardell said that there are no indications that negotiations with striking miners are moving toward a solution in the near future. “Since nearly all our electrical energy is generated by coal-fired units, prolongation of the strike will further jeopardize the continued supply of power to our customers,” he added.

“Even if the miners and coal operators reach an agreement in the near future, it still requires about ten days for the ratification process and, if approved, an additional week for coal to reach the generating stations,” McCardell continued. “So the time element is becoming critical.”
