Collins estimated he would need less than three cords to heat his hohse all winter.
Sofne people buy wood stoves in case of an emergency power failure, others because they regard cutting wood as healthful recreation. Collins said he likes his wood stove because it gives him a great feeling of independence while providing radiant warmth.
But there are disadvantages in using wood stoves, too.
First, it takes a lot of work and time to install stoves, cut wood, haul wood and clean flues. Rather than paying for such services, many stove owners prefer to do the work themselves.
But then they need a chain saw, a suitable vehicle and access to wood. The “do-ityourself” method may require initial investments for some.
Second, though wood stoves are more efficient than fireplaces, they are usually not as efficient as oil, gas or electric systems, Collins said. The best airtight stoves are 60 per cent efficient.
Oil furnaces, for example, are 65 to 70 per cent efficient.
