According to White, the quickest way to establishing a fescue stand is plowing and seeding in the fall, around October 1, or in the spring after March 1. With spring planting, there’s not usually enough growth to stockpile in the first year, he noted. However, said White, if seed is planted in fall, growth is usually sufficient to provide winter grazing the following year.
If the farmer decides to just broadcast fescue seed on his field and allows his cattle to stomp the seed into the ground, White said it would take about three years to fill in the pasture for stockpiling. He suggested using 15 to 20 pounds of fescue seed to the acre and then coming back after the stand was established to over-seed with clover for optimal pasture quality.
