net increase ot o.lUo animals east of the Blue Ridge. West of the Blue Ridge, however, in 1976 there were 20,912 deer harvested; in 1977 there were 17,933 animals harvested for a decrease of 2,979. Some of the leading counties east of the Blue Ridge were Southampton, with an alltime state record of 3,112 animals harvested. Next came Caroline Co., with 2,243 animals; Amelia, with 2,157; Powhatan, with 2,022; and finally Sussex with 1,435.
West of the Blue Ridge, the leading counties were Rockingham with 1,941; Bath, 1,892; Shenandoah with 1,321; Highland, 1,151; Augusta, 1,143; Botetourt, 1,136 and Grayson 1,112. Rain, snow, sleet and fog west of the Blue Ridge caused a decrease in those areas during most of the twoweek-long season and consequently reduced the man-days of hunting.
