White also advocated overseeding with clover to give high quality grazing for calves. Young animals achieve better weight gains if a fanner has legumes in his grass pastures, he noted. “The challenge is to keep clover in these pastures,” White said.
According to White, “musts for over-seeding” include minimizing competition by keeping fields grazed or mowed down short and using quality seed at the proper date—between midFebruary and mid-March.
Over-seeding clover in fescue can make the difference between cattle grazing and not grazing in the summer, he continued. In addition, he noted that it is possible to omit nitrogen application on fescue if the pasture contains enough clover.
White recommended using two to three pounds of red clover seed or one to two pounds of ladino per acre for pasture. Using a seeder is the surest way of getting a good stand of clover but White acknowledged that this method was expensive.
