FEED THE BIRDS! All wildlife is finding it difficult to find food with snow covering the ground. The following ten tips will help our feathered friends this winter and all year too.
1. Feed the birds what they want. Experiments show cracked corn, sunflower and millet are preferred. All can be found in wild birdseed mixtures which are a better buy in 50-pound bags than 5 or 10-pound bags.
2. Feed selectively. To discourage starlings, sparrows and pigeons use sunflower seeds.
3. Experiment with new commercial foods.
4. Use beef suet year round. Available from butcher shops, it will attrac' woodpeckers. Put it in an onion bag or suet feeder made of wire and hang against a tree trunk or from a tree limb.
