program. Under the program, artists and writers are in residence in Virginia schools from one week to the full school year. Grants to individual schools to cover costs range from $250 to $7,500.
This looks like one give-away program that deserves investigating by school authorities. There may be a thousand reasons why Rappahannock Elementary school could not qualify for an in-residence artist who could work with children but then again, we might be given top priority.
Space shouldn’t be a problem. If there are no empty rooms for an art program, then the artist could instead visit individual classes on a regular basis. This would serve a dual purpose—students would get art instruction and at the same time, regular classroom teachers may be able to have a few minutes of unencumbered planning time or a chance to relax.
We urge the Rappahannock School Board members to contact the Virginia Commission of Arts and Humanities in Richmond for more information and application forms for the Artist-inSchools program.
