Make sure the chimney is either a sound tile-lined flue, or a prefabricated one approved by Underwriters' Laboratories. Connect only one stove to a chimney. Don't use the fireplace flue for a second heating unit; flue gases and sparks may pass from one flue opening into another. Multiple connections may cause poor draft and unsatisfactory operation.
Watch out for creosote buildup inside stovepipes and chimneys. Creosote is that black, tar-like substance formed from burning wood. Too much creosote or soot buildup in stove pipes or chimneys can lead to chimney fires. To decrease creosote buildup, burn only dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Don’t burn soft or green wood.
