^■Potomac Edison and Allegheny Power System, the major supplier of electrical power to homes in Rappahnnock County, announced this week that it has only a 40-day normal fuel supply on hand. According to John M. McCardell, the company’s Executive VicePresident and General Manager, Potomac Edison has had to implement step one of its “emergency energy control plan,” as a result of the United Mine Workers prolonged coal strike. Step one is a general public appeal for voluntary curtailment of all nonessential uses. The energy control plan includes “more drastic measures in case our fuel supplies drop to a level where voluntary reductions in use are no longer sufficient for maintaining minimum service,” said McCardell.
Step two becomes effective should fuel reserves drop to less than a 30 day supply. Measures to futher reduce electrical consumption include:
—Curtailment of nighttime sports, entertainment and recreational activities,
—Restriction of retail establishment operation to six days per week
—Closing from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. of all retail establishments not providing essential public services.
The Governor is authorized to put step three into action if fuel supplies for Potomac Edison’s power stations decrease to a 25-day reserve. All industrial customers will then be required to curtail monthly electrical usage on a continuous basis by 30 per cent of average monthly usage during the previous 12 months.
Final steps include requiring industrial customers to futher reduce electrical use to the level necessary to maintain only basic plant and employee security and interrupting electrical service to groups of customers by dropping circuits for a specified period of time on a rotating basis.
