Wood stoves are much more efficient than fireplaces for heating.

Eldridge R. Collins Jr., Extension specialist in Virginia Tech’s agricultural engineering department, says fireplaces produce cozy atmospheres, but they’re only 10 to 15 per cent efficient. Most of their heat goes up the chimney.

In wood stoves draff is controlled so more heat radiates into a room. Airtight wood stoves are usually from 45 to 60 per cent efficient.
