THE HOUSE reversed an earlier decision last week and approved a bill sponsored by Del. David Brickley (D-Prince William) which would require state registration of farm land owned by foreign interests.
The House had rejected the measure, but later reconsidered its decision and placed it back on the calendar, finally approving it on a 58-38 vote.
Del. Ray Garland (RRoanoke) opposed the bill, saying it duplicated farmland ownership disclosure requirements already set out by the federal government.
Garland said only 17,000 acres of an estimated 23 million acres of farm land in Virginia is foreignowned.
Brickley has said foreign ownership has appeared to be on the increase in Virginia and his bill would allow state agriculture officials to keep tabs on the situation.
* * • • VOLUNTEER RESCUE squads in Virginia may be able to seek exemptions from tough state regulations on equipment and training under legislation already approved by the House. Del. Mary Sue Terry (D-Patrick) said allowances for variances from the regulations are necessary to keep rescue squads in some rural areas in business.
