After breakfast, it took only a few minutes for everyone to pack up. But our departure was delayed when petty acts of vandalism were uncovered as teachers checked out rooms on the second floor where the boys stayed.
It was a classic case of a few rotten Rappahannock apples making it rough for the whole barrel. As the buses finally rolled on to Jamestown an hour later, we were a subdued bunch. The kids were aware that the line between pranks and a serious offense had been crossed. They barely whispered.
Because of our delayed start, we skipped a planned stop at the site of the original lamestown. I felt better when we learned that the New World’s first permanent English settlement and Virginia’s first capital now rests underneath the James River. We wouldn’t have seen much except waves and the sea wall and the way things were going that morning, someone’s child would have fallen into the brink.

Dr. William Bloomer, superintendent of schools for Rappahannock County, announced guidelines this week for public presentations at the School Board’s first budget session, scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school library.
Persons or organizations wishing to offer proposals for Ihe 1979-80 school budget should contact the School Board office, 987-8773, prior to the meeting on February 20 in order to be placed on :he agenda. Speakers are also ‘equested to provide the school Board with a written x>py of remarks.
