Rappahannock County High School students socred slightly below the state average and about even with neighboring school systems on minimum competency tests for graduation administered last October. Excluding handicapped students, 78.7 per cent of Rappahannock’s tenth graders passed math and reading tests. Statewide, 82.2 per cent passed both sections.
Taking the two sections of the test separately, county students faired slightly better in reading with 87.2 per cent passing. The math portion was passed by 86.2 per cent. Sixteen per cent of RCHS tenth graders passed only one section of the test, either reading or math, while 5.3 per cent failed both.
In the state as a whole, 86.6 per cent passed the reading section and 87.3 passed the math section. Ten per cent passed only one test and 7.8 per cent failed both.
Passing score on both tests is 70 per cent. To pass, a student must correctly answer at least 42 of the 60 reading questions and 70 of the 99 math questions.
