Supervisor for a year and travelled all over the county in a horse aind buggy, staying over night with folk in what ever community I was working, supervising the one room schools,” she added.
“I taught for part of a year in the school at Huntly where conditions were extremely primitive. You had to be a doctor and a nurse to survive,” said Miss Almond. “My father became ill and I stayed with him at the hospital in Charlottesville and in Charlottesville I also worked in the children’s building at the Blue Ridge Sanitorium.”
After her father’s death in 1948 Miss Almond went to Harrisonburg to renew her teaching certificate at what is now James Madison University and then began teaching primary grades in Fairfax County. During this time she purchased her present home after breaking up housekeeping following the death of her father. She stored family antiques, china and other items in homes of various friends and now enjoys them all in the solid comfort and security of her Washington home.
