Closer to home, Washington (D. C.) Gas Light Company was greeted with public outcry over a similar proposal to tack on a surcharge ranging from $7.80 to $14 a month to the bills of customers who significantly cut gas consumption by using heat pumps, propane or other energy sources. The controversial plan, opposed by the U. S. Department of Energy, will be discussed in public hearings in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, the company’s service area.
