At the retail level, most of the major food stores in Virginia have adequate supplies even though some deliveries are late in arriving at the distribution center. Commissioner Carbaugh urged consumers to continue normal purchasing, noting that panic buying will deplete inventories and cause consumer food prices to rise.
Scattered reports indicate that shipments of beef from the Midwest have been slowed. Live poultry is moving into plants with most operating at capacity although there is some disruption in moving finished products to other states, causing storage build-up.
There has been no interruption in the movement of grain, eggs, feed, milk or fertilizer. Also, there has been little or no problem in moving livestock from the weekly auction markets.
