To the editor:
Congratulations on your excellent editorial, “Apology Deserved” in last week’s Rappahannock News. When I hear how Mrs. Buntin was publicly humiliated at the budget hearing, I felt a great injustice had been done.
I worked with Mrs. Buntin for ten years. I have never seen a more dedicated, conscientious, caring individual. Unfortunately, she slaves in a thankless job and seems to be personally blamed for the mere •existence of the total unpopular welfare program.
For several years, Mrs. Buntin and I discussed our overwhelming responsibility and the need for a second Social Worker. It is true that complicated federal and state regulations and required forms added to our burden, but this was not our fault. Nor was it the fault of the many people who will suffer and cost the taxpayers money in the long run.
A great majority of the work of a Social Worker is preventive in nature. Counselling and other services are provided so that families can live together, and the mothers and children do not have to draw welfare for years. There are the
