Young described alcohol as a depressant and an anesthesizing drug that impairs thinking and lessens motor control. “Alcohol causes more deaths, family problems and accidents than all other drugs combined,” he said.
He pointed to recent trends among youth toward mixing alcohol and other drugs. With this new approach, “kids are often playing with a lot of fire,” Young said.
Drugs Cause Changes
Dr. Krebser defined drug as “any substance that causes changes in living protoplasm.” He included alcohol in that category. “Basically, it is a drug.”
Reviewing other popular drug substances, Krebser noted that marijuana use has increased to the point where 10 to 12 million Americans take it. “Most adolescents, if they do it, smoke once a month,” he added.
