Congressman Edward Boland of Massachusetts, chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the US House of Representatives, has raised serious doubts about the proposed closing of the Vint Hill Farms Station military base.
The Department of Defense for several years has considered closing Vint Hill which annually pumps approxomately $23 million into the economy here.
But no firm plans for closing the base have been set.
A spokesman for Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson (RWinchester) said last Thursday that “it would be at least 1985 before any military personnel there would be transferred as a result of closing the base, “in the event that it is closed.”
Boland raised doubts about the closing proposal in a letter to Defense Secretary Harold Brown. Boland’s letter followed a negative analysis of the proposed phase-out that had been prepared by his committee’s staff. The staff investigation and Boland’s intercession had been requested by Rep. Robinson, top-ranking Republican on the Intelligence panel, who represents Rappahannock Country residents.
“There have been no new developments in , the proposed closing of Vint Hill,” said Robinson’s spokesman. “We’re just trying to keep the pressure on (to prevent the phase-out).”
The defense department has proposed that US Army Intelligence and Support Command (INSCOM) personnel and systems be , transferred from Vint Hill to Ft. Meade.

Shenandoah National Park i will extend the nighttime closure of the north and south sections through Jan. 5, to enable Park Rangers to concentrate hunting patrols in and along the park boundary in those counties still open for the state hunting season.
