Masterson suggested that the planners consider limiting the storage of chemicals at the co-op/ in order to lessen the danger from fire that could threaten the safety of students in the schools.
In action on the motion, Luke, Dave Fannon and Estes voted to recommend approval of the rezoning. Chairman H. S. Barksdale, Miller and Masterson voted against a favorable recommendation. Alan Stokes abstained on the grounds of his membership on the co-op’s board of directors.
Under a tie vote, the rezoning application will be forwarded to the supervisors for action at their December 6 public hearing with no recommendation from the planning commission.
“I’d like to have the secretary prepare a statement with our reasons for opposing this,’’ said Miller, getting consent from Masterson and Barksdale. “9.66 acres is too much land," he concluded.
