experience blackouts, mental losses which occur even when the alcoholic isn’t imbibing. Physical withdrawal signs —“The morning after shakes”—start to appear. The alcoholic usually has trouble with his or her job and becomes increasingly isolated, hanging around only with other heavy drinkers. Liver disintegration continues, causing a loss of tolerance to alcohol. “Two drinks and they're under the table,” Treanor said.
According to Treanor, women alcoholics deteriorate faster than men and teenagers speed through the stages to total addiction fastest of all. For an adult, addition to alcohol takes 10 to 15 years to occur. “It takes an adolescent one-tenth of that time, ” said Treanor.
Effects On The Family
Sometimes those people living with an alcoholic—or any other drug abuser—are in worse shape than the addict, according to Treanor. Other members of the family tend to feel guilty, to rationalize and blame themselves for the addict's problems with drugs or alcohol, he said.
National statistics show that nine out of every ten women who are marreid to an alcoholic and then divorced, remarry another alcoholic, Treanor reported.
