With the exception of Dr. Krebser, Eastham noted, none of the panel had discussed anything but alcohol. “We’ve lived with alcohol all these years,’’ he said, adding that drugs were new within the last 20 years and called for new approaches in attempts by the school board to control their use.
"Where are our school age children going” in regard to marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and barbituates? asked Eastham. “Where are they now?”
In explanation of the attention given to alcoholism, school board chairman Beverly Massie maintained that understanding problems or drug and alcohol abuse requires looking at the entire family, particularly the parents who serve as models for school aged children.
“Kids are going to alcohol,” said Dr. Young in response to Eastham’s question. “They’re still using the drugs acquired over the last generation and they’re adding alcohol.”
