Side effects found in studies conducted in France show sperm destruction and alteration, said Krebser.

Besides producing an “amotivational syndrome— the ‘I don’t care attitude,’ ” marijuana affects the bronchial tubes, Krebser said. “Habitual users glmost invariably get bronchitis and who knows, in 10 or 20 years, they may get lung cancer,” he added.

Psychedelics—LSD, PCP, mescaline—are also deposited in the brain tissue. Krebser warned that residue may cause re-occuring hallucinations months after the actual dose of the drug is taken. He also noted that users of psychedelics, particularly PCP (commonly .known as angel dust, killer weed or KW), may exhibit symptoms of schizophrenic behavior.

Addressing the category of stimulants, Krebser said amphetamines or “speed” are often used in combination with heroin and other drugs to accentuate a “high.” “They take speed first to get hyped up and then heroin to bring them down,” he said.

Opium derivatives—heroin and morphine—are usually taken intraveniously, presenting another threat added to the danger of physical addiction, Krebser said. He explained that users don’t always clean their needles, syringes and other instruments properly before injecting the drug and often introduce an infection into the blood stream.

Moving back to alcohol, Krebser maintained it is one of the biggest problems in the area of drugs. Whether the user is a social drinker, problem drinker or true alcoholic with more of a psychological, genetic-related disease, "the effect is all the same,” said Krebser. Alcohol creates a psychological and physical dependence, he said, adding that drinkers build up a tolerance to the substance until their livers begin to be destroyed.

Krebser told the audience that the liver can metabolize 15 to 20 cc.’s of alcohol per hour. If a drinker consumes less than that amount, he or she can usually manager to stay relatively sober. Once this limit is exceeded, for instance with more than 2.5 to three beers per hour or three glasses of wine, drunkenness occurs, Krebser said.
