Any mood altering drug is potentially addicting—either psychologically or physically, according to Treanor. In explaining the addiction process, he said that people start taking drugs or alcohol to feel good and end up taking it so they don’t feel bad. “They never get that happy feeling again” and must use drugs or alcohol to relieve their psychological pain, Treanor said.
Noting the “great number of alcholics in the county,” Treanor guessed the incidence of alcoholism in Rappahannock is approximately the same as it is for the nation with one in evey eight drinkers a fullfledged alcoholic.
Reviewing the steps in alcoholism, he said that individuals are very defensive about their dimking in the early stages and make attempts at control by switching brands of liquor for instance. Changes in social behavior are noticeable: “The fellow who starts making a fool of himself at parties, the kid who starts doing poorly at shcool.”
Drinkers in the early stages of alcoholism show a high tolerance for alcohol. They may also begin to seek the company of other drinkers, Treanor said.
Social disintegration continues into the middle stages of alcoholism. Teanor said the individual begins to lose control of the effect drinking has. Tolerance decreases. Health problems start to crop up. The individual hides the amount of alcohol he or she is drinking and begins to worry about protecting his or her supply, according to Treanor.
In the late stages of full blown alcoholism, health problems increase. Treanor said the dimker begins to
