first transmission lines in the county were built in 1930 and supplied all of the electrical needs at that time. Then, as demand grew and reliability became more important, a second line from Front Royal through Flint Hill to the Sperryville substation was “overbuilt” on top of the existing line. In 1967, Nichols continued, Potomac Edison tied in with Virginia Electric and Power Company in Madison County.
According to Nichols, the maximum demand here in 1970 was 3,300 kilowatts. In 1979, he said, the maximum demand reached 6,300 kilowatts. He acknowledged that the 1979 level showed a reduction of 900 kilowatts over the previous two years, the result of conservation efforts on the part of consumers.
Firm Power
Available firm power from PE for Rappahannock on one line is 9,000 kilowatts, Nichols reported. He added, however, that service quality begins to deteriorate at that level.
