Soccer Considered
Board member Allen Stokes pointed out that the board “overlooked” including an appropriation for a high school soccer program in the proposed 1980-81 budget. “I’m very much in favor of this.” added Stokes.
The board authorized Bloomer to ask for a waiver from the state Department of Education to allow Bob Haase to coach a soccer team. Normally, regulations require that a coach also be a full-time faculty member which Haase is not.
The board members indicated they will make a decision on beginning a soccer program at RCHS after the waiver is acted upon.
At the request of assistant principal John Toth, the board approved an appropriation of $500 for a higher fence in front of the bleachers at the RCHS baseball field.
Board member Walter Masterson suggested that a sign be erected warning spectators that they attended at their own risk.
“We can put up a sign but will that relieve us of responsibility?” asked Charles Eldred, suggesting that liability in the case of an accident caused by a flying ball be reviewed.
The board also agreed to “express an interest in writing” in action initiated by Bath County to challenge “arbitrary and discriminatory funding” of education by the state. Bath's potential suit also maintains that the state has failed to address educational problems in sparsely populated jurisdictions.
