Attorney Sharon Genebach Luke presented Robertson on Thursday with petitions in favor of the referendum signed by 341 registered voters. Law requires that the petitions be signed by 15 per cent or more of the number of registered voters who cast ballots in the last presidential election.
According to registrar Ruth Kilby, 2,040 people here voted in the 1976 presidential race.
Currently, school board members are appointed by a three member board of electoral trustees. Of the three trustees, chairman C. E. “Ned” Johnson of Sperryville has served for almost a quarter of a century, Johnson, Christine Johnston, also of Sperryville, and Granville Eastham of Flint Hill were appointed last year to three year terms as trustees by Judge Rayner V. Snead, since retired.
Virginia law allows for only two methods of naming local school boards: either appointment by an appointed board of electoral trustees or by an elected board of supervisors.
