Contacted on Tuesday, Baumgardner said he was unaware that a referendum on the method of selecting school board members had been called for by circuit court judge Shore Robertson. The commonwealth attorney, who was out of the county for several days last week, said he’d received no notice of the order signed last Thursday by Robertson, setting the referendum for June 17.
Baumgardner added that, to his knowledge, the electoral trustees were also unaware of the June 17 vote on whether to change the method of appointing school board members to election by the board of supervisors.
According to Sharon Geneback Luke, Washington lawyer representing a group of concerned parents and citizens who circulated the required petitions for the referendum, the trustees cannot fill the upcoming school board vacancies unless the referendum fails.
