After statements of support from local governments and citizens in Madison, Orange, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Fauquier counties. Governor John Dalton personally approved an extension in mandatory retirement age for LeGarde who turns 70 in May. LeGarde was to stay on until June 30 at full status and until December 31 in an advisory capacity. If an adequate replacement acceptable to all local governf ments in the district wasn’t found, then LeGarde was to remain with the Health Department indefinitely.
According to Beard, this arrangement is still in force. The letter from Oglesby read by Beard notes that documentation for LeGarde to retire on June 30, 1980,
